On Medical Wonders and Horrors

November 30th, 2005 by aleanor

An excerpt of today’s news - French woman has first partial face transplant.

LYON, France (Reuters) - French surgeons have performed what they said on Wednesday was the world’s first partial face transplant — giving a new nose, chin and lips to a woman savaged by a dog.

Specialists from two French hospitals carried out the operation on a 38-year-old woman on Sunday in the northern city of Amiens by grafting on tissues, muscles, arteries and veins from a brain-dead woman. "The patient is in an excellent state and the transplant looks normal," the hospitals said in a brief statement after waiting three days to announce the pioneering surgery.

The woman, who was not identified, had been left without a nose and lips after the dog attacked her last May, and was unable to talk or chew properly.

It appears that the old debacle over the morality of intervenious medical science is back on the burner. Previously it was the morality of bearing a child for the sake of providing a bone marrow for his/her sibling who is dying of leukemia, euthanasia on issues of the right to live or the right to die, on abortions, on transgender operations and its implication on religion and values of society, on plastic surgeries, on skin grafting procedures, on organ transplants, cloning etc etc.

Now you take another person’s nose and lips (note the other debacle about whether someone who is brain dead is really dead though according to medical science a person is properly dead once he/she is brain dead) and plaster it on someone else? Hmm I think this will raise more concerns on ‘morals and values’ of the human society considering the donor would not be able to properly consent (assuming one never consented to having the nose and lips grafted upon death) - until the issues may be sorted out on the morality of taking organs from those who has not in their lifetime consented to donate them vs the right to the quality of life of those who are alive but horribly disfigured, i doubt there this issue may be resolved.

Morality and values are deemed and judged by society. Note the cultural and religious differences between societies and the values appreciated by them - I doubt there is a certain standard that can be deemed as a ’societal value’ that may be shared by all. Medical science on the other hand is judged by the advancement of the human mind and capability to reduce the suffering and/or to save the lives of people.

I doubt there will ever be a consensus on these issues. To be or not to be … that is the question.

New job, New life

November 14th, 2005 by aleanor

Hi hi …

Its been a while I know, time for me to reassert myself in the blogging world. I have delayed in updating my blog, simply because I have finally resigned from my old job, and found a new one. With the initial plan of helping my hubby out, I was surprised myself how come I accepted a new job? Well, to be frank, I didn’t expect to be hired when I first tendered my resignation … but after I did, they offered me a position here. Much thought and consideration I finally decided to accept the job offer for the following reasons:

1. The pay is better

2. Its less risky as compared to working for my hubby

3. The new boss

4. The new environment

5. The nature of work

6. The job experience

For those who are interested, I shall henceforth be doing internal auditing. People here appears thus far rather friendly. The workspace is very nice, the decor appears urhmm … nice. hahaha. Don’t know how to describe really but its a very cheery environment. And no need to pay a single cent for canteen food!! But then, the food’s not very interesting …

One downpoint is that expenses increases here … Parking here even more expensive than before, food as well. And another downpoint, it seems that the boss doesn’t allow ‘tah pau’ food … Smells it seems. So therefore my bad habit … virtually non-existent anymore. Never during working hours, minimal before and after work (due to time constraint). AHAHA. Oh, the silence here can be really defeaning sometimes too, as this is a very small firm, and almost everyone goes in and out, in and out …

Oh oh … one more thing I forgot to blog about … I am legally married! Got registered on the 30th of September, though culturally I am not considered married as yet. This will have to be delayed for the time being, $$ being a big factor. Terrible to have big families at this time. LOL. Kidding, kidding. Took some pictures for the day, will post it up when it is convenient.

Will have more to blog about soon …

Do you have a Japanese name?

September 22nd, 2005 by aleanor

Saw this link on one of my friend’s blog … figured I would give it a try.

I typed in my surname first, then my last name.

And this is what I got:

秋本 Akimoto (autumn book) 三千代 Michiyo (three thousand generations)

Then I decided it is my other half’s turn. So I typed in his surname first (we share the same), then his last name.

And this is what I got:

秋本 Akimoto (autumn book) 健太 Kenta (healthy and plump)

LOL~

He won’t like this … :)

Growing Older

August 11th, 2005 by aleanor

It just hit me how much I have changed in the recent years … with every passing day, every passing hour, every passing minute and with every passing second I become a little … older.

Gone were the days where you can be carefree … your only worry would be to pass your exams, have a good relationship with your family and friends, and possible relationship problems. Everything seemed so difficult - growing pains I think they call it.

Now you grow older, you are still plagued with the same stresses - passing exams (well for me anyway since I am pursuing another degree), having a good relationship with your family and friends, and possible relationship problems. Somehow, you tend to take those stresses in stride - whereas you would probably have hit rock bottom if all of those stresses hit you all at the same time when you were younger. Its different now … not that it does not affect you, but it just doesn’t affects you quite the same way. You note your stress, your pain, your worries … but work is work, you still ignore everything else when you work. How come I couldn’t do that when I was studying? Could have helped my grades quite a bit. haha. Oh well.

I guess what I am trying to note is this … as one grows older, one’s perspective on anything and everything changes. And the best part is, when you try hard to recall, you won’t remember how it happened? Perhaps this is called maturity? In many ways, I still need to mature of course … but I think … I am doing alright now.

For those (you know who you are) who has helped me through the growing pains, I just want to thank you for all you have done. I am happy now. Thank you.

English Grammar

June 29th, 2005 by aleanor

I have been appointed as the Chief Grammarian in my company … So I have been doing quite a lot of research on English Grammar. Found this link on Jason’s blog, and decided to give it a try. I think I still need some work. Haha! This is how I fared:

English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 93% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can’t find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don’t. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you’re not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

For the complete Answer Key, visit my blog: http://shortredhead78.blogspot.com/.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 60% on Beginner
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 56% on Intermediate
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 81% on Advanced
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 91% on Expert

Hmmm … seems like a lot of people scored a 100% in the Beginner and Intermediate level! Anyway, I don’t think its a very accurate test, especially in the Expert section as (I believe) that the questions are too easy to be graded "Expert".

Emotions

May 12th, 2005 by aleanor

It is time to clear my Inbox (I have to get rid of some old emails at some point!) but I am reluctant to delete this particular one.

I have kept this email I got from a friend for a long long time now … It touched me much … I still cry when I read it, so I shall post it here, enjoy.

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived; happiness, sadness, knowledge, and all the others, including love.

One day, it was announced to all of the feelings, that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all of the feelings prepared their boats to leave. Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island until the last possible moment. When the island was almost totally under water, love decided it was time to leave.

She began looking for someone to ask for help. Just then, ‘Richness’ was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, "Richness, can I come with you on your boat?" Richness answered, "I’m sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere."

Then Love decided to ask ‘Vanity’ for help, who was passing in a beautiful vessel. Love cried out, "Vanity, help me please." "I can’t help you", Vanity said, "You are all wet, and will damage my beautiful boat."

Next, Love saw ‘Sadness’ passing by. Love said, " Sadness, please let me go with you." Sadness answered, "Love, I’m sorry, but, I just need to be alone now."

Then, Love saw ‘Happiness’. Love cried out, "Happiness, please take me with you." But Happiness was so overjoyed, that he didn’t hear Love calling to him. Love began to cry. Then, she heard a voice saying, "Come Love, I will take you with me." It was an old man. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed, that she forgot to ask the old man his name.

When they arrived on land, the old man went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the old man. Love then found ‘Knowledge’ and asked, "Who was it that helped me?"

"It was Time", Knowledge answered. "But why did Time help me when no one else would?", Love asked. Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

Elementz

May 5th, 2005 by aleanor

I found this at at a website that determines your personality based on anime characters. This is me (apparently):

Your element is Fire: Strong, hot tempered, powerful, and passionate. Well now lets see, being fire you are quite strong and powerful, people look up to you greatly and often seek your protection. You have the ability to gain many friends and you are always one people can count on to do what you say you will do. You are extremely loyal be it friends or family you’ll stick up for them and you are never willing to put them in a position that could hurt them. You know what roll you play in life, leader, and you intend to let people know it. Not everyone is capable of leadership but you certainly have the willpower and flare to do it. You have quite a temper if it shows itself, one that can often lead you into trouble. Once your mind is made up there is no changing it but no one said that was a bad thing.
